Booking your family photo session in Jacksonville, FL, should be an exciting and stress-free experience. As a Jacksonville family portrait photographer, I want to help you feel confident and prepared before your photo session. These simple tips will guide you on outfits, lighting, and mindset so your session feels natural and fun, while giving you timeless images you’ll love.

Family Photo Outfits Are Important

Wearing something that makes you feel comfortable and confident is key. Neutral tones, soft textures, and slight patterns create a cohesive look for family portraits. In my Jacksonville photography sessions, I recommend mixing fabrics and styles without being too matchy—this adds depth and keeps your photos looking timeless. I go further into detail about what to wear for family photos in another blog post.

Lighting Matters

If you love golden, dreamy photos, the secret is timing. The golden hour is one or two hours before sunset (depending on the location and time of year), and it creates the most flattering light for natural light photography. I guide my Jacksonville families to the best places and times so their session captures that warm, glowing magic. If your schedule doesn’t allow us to work during golden hour, we can always work together at a time that suits you and your family.

Make Family Photos Fun

Family photos aren’t about stiff poses. They’re about connection. Play with your kids, chase them, laugh together—those moments always photograph best. When families relax and enjoy themselves, the photos reflect genuine joy.

Trust the Process

It’s natural to feel a little awkward at first. Trust me—I’ll guide you through poses, prompts, and angles that look natural. What feels silly in the moment often turns into the most beautiful image.

Let Kids Be Kids in Family Photos

Don’t stress if your children don’t want to sit still. Some of the best photos happen when kids are free to explore, play, and show their personalities. I’d much rather capture authentic childhood moments than force stiff smiles.

Bring Items for Success

Bringing small items can make a big difference—such as your favorite toys, books, or even a family blanket. Snacks like miniature marshmallows make a quick treat, and staying hydrated with water is essential when you need to stay cooler in Jacksonville, FL, for 90% of the year.

FAQs

Q: What should we wear for family photos in Jacksonville, FL?
A: Stick with neutral tones (cream, tan, blush, pastels), layers, and comfortable outfits that reflect your family’s style without clashing. Look at this Amazon shopping list for neutral tones to get an idea of what works well for family photos. Typically, I say, “come as you are,” but in this case, what you wear every day doesn’t always translate into what looks best in pictures.

Q: When is the best time for family photos in natural light?
A: Anytime of day during sunlight, we can create an image with light. For the most magical and dreamy images, you may prefer golden hour (an hour before sunset).

Q: Do you help with posing for family photos?
A: Yes! I guide you through natural interactions so you never feel stiff or awkward. Most families in the South are showing up ready to “cheese” at the camera — which we can include — but feel free to be present with your family during your session. I will be there watching and capturing your memories when beautiful connections occur.

Q: What if my kids don’t cooperate during family photos?
A: That’s okay. I encourage kids to be themselves. Those candid moments are often the most meaningful. “Let them.” Let your kiddos be silly, grumpy, or stare at the camera. This won’t be the last session of your life or theirs.

Q: What should we do if it rains on the day of our scheduled family photo session?
A: We will move the time to before or after the session if that works. If it does not, we can both decide on a day that works for us. I am totally flexible with scheduling.

Q: How many family members can be included in a family photo session?
A: For a family session, this includes one household: 2 adults, children, and a dog. For extended-family sessions, this includes one household plus grandparents, an aunt, an uncle, and cousins (with their dogs).

Q: What types of locations are available for family photography sessions in Jacksonville, FL?
A: If you know of a location where we can work. Your home, a park, the beach, the city, a farm, or even a studio (with A/C) are options for you to create memories with your family.

Q: What is the typical duration of a family photo session?
A: We offer full sessions at just under an hour or half sessions that last just under 30 minutes.
